Epic showdowns set for final day of 2025 MB Nottingham Junior Championships

The 2025 MB Nottingham English Junior Championships (EJC) reach their conclusion in Nottingham today, when the destination of the event’s coveted trophies will be decided across all eleven age categories.

Yesterday’s action in the main draws of the EJC’s new multi-match Monrad format delivered some scintillating contests, with a few unexpected twists shaking up the seeding predictions. As the dust settles, the stage is now set for today’s thrilling battles, where the top quartets will compete for championship glory.

Every top seed remains in contention, with only one category missing its second seed. The 3/4 seeds have largely held their ground, though a few determined challengers have shaken up expectations. Saturday’s standout performances saw several lower-seeded competitors rise to the occasion, staking their claims in the race for silverware."

That group includes 5/8 seeds Ronnie Hickling (Surrey) and Ismail Khalil (Warwickshire) in the BU19 event, along with Sophie Marzouk (Sussex) in the GU17. Joining them are Don Calvert (Yorkshire) and Bella Gokani (Leicestershire), seeded 9/16 in the BU15 and GU15 tournaments, respectively.

Buckinghamshire's Emily Coulcher-Porter in action at the 2025 MB Nottingham English Junior Championships.

Hickling, the current BU17 trophy-holder, and Khalil, who won the 2023 BU15 and 2019 BU11 events, are two of some 17 champions from previous years still in contention at this year’s event. Others include their fellow BU19 competitors, [1] Alex Broadbridge (Hampshire) and [2] Dylan Roberts (Kent), as well as GU19 front-runners, [1] Mariam Eissa (Warwickshire) and [2] Emily Coulcher-Porter (Buckinghamshire).

Also appearing on past EJC rolls of honour are [3/4] Ali Khalil (Warwickshire) from this year’s BU17 category; [1] Harriet Broadbridge (Hampshire) and [3/4] Fearne Copley (Yorkshire) (both GU17); (1) Ameerah Ismail (Warwickshire) and (2) Esther Chak (Surrey) (both GU15); [2] Finley Brown (Leicestershire) and (3/4) Ben Lamond (Dorset) (both BU13); [2] Maya Goel (Surrey) and [3/4] Siona Mishra (Warwickshire) (both GU13); and [2] Thomas Earwicker (Surrey) and [3/4] Naishe Matamisa (both BU11).

Each of these players will be aiming to add to their personal EJC trophy collection, but they’ll face stiff competition, as every other contender will be equally determined to start their own.
