FAQs

In spring 2024, England Squash club affiliation and membership is changing. To help support the squash community through this transition period, we’ve put together some frequently asked questions on how the changes might impact and benefit players, coaches, clubs, league organisers and county associations.

General

Why is England Squash membership and affiliation changing?

From spring 2024, England Squash membership will change to a new ‘direct’ model. This change will enable us to deliver better value to members and clubs, broaden the appeal and diversity of membership and provide better support to the squash community, as well as providing a greater opportunity to grow membership in future.

You can read more about how the changes will benefit the squash community on our ‘Why is membership changing?’ page.

What is the background for the change?

The current model has been in place for a long period of time and no longer reflects how modern-day organisations engage with their members. The benefits and value that the scheme offers to members have also not changed, meaning that membership does not sufficiently meet the needs of enough people within the squash community.

The pandemic, and subsequent ‘return to play’ challenges provided everyone the opportunity to reflect on the suitability of the current scheme, and following insight and feedback from the squash community, a review of membership was conducted in 2022.

This independent review, undertaken by an external agency, included consultation with a wide range of stakeholder groups including clubs, counties and individual members. The key recommendation from the review was to move to a direct membership model.

Why have you pushed back the launch?

We want to give the squash community more time to prepare for the change and to provide further opportunities for people to join the conversation on how the new scheme is rolled out.

We recognise that switching to a direct membership model is a significant cultural shift for the squash community. We want the transition to work well for everyone and for everyone affected to have the opportunity to fully understand and engage with the changes.

We are therefore inviting players, coaches, clubs, league organisers, county associations and anyone else affected to join the conversation in order to refine the membership scheme and ensure it supports everyone across the squash community to thrive

When is membership and affiliation changing?

The new scheme will officially launch in spring 2024. However affiliated clubs and current members won't need to do anything until their affiliation or membership is due for renewal after this date. We encourage players who are members of an affiliated club to check their renewal date on their member dashboard so that they can understand when they will move onto the new membership scheme and begin to access the new benefits.

Player members

How will this impact players whose affiliated club pay for their England Squash membership?

Currently, players who join England Squash via their club have their England Squash player membership paid by the club. In spring 2024, this will change and all members will purchase their membership directly from England Squash when their current membership expires.

We encourage players who are members of an affiliated club to check their renewal date on their member dashboard so that they can understand when they’ll need to transition onto the new membership scheme.

How will this affect members who pay for their membership directly through from England Squash?

The principle of membership for ‘direct’ members will not change, and these members will continue to purchase their membership directly from England Squash.

However, new membership categories, specifically tailored to different types of players, will be introduced in spring 2024. These new categories will provide much greater choice for members around the type of membership they hold.

Existing members will be able to continue to access all of their existing benefits until their current membership expires, at which point they will choose from one of the exciting new membership categories. There will also be an opportunity to upgrade to one of the new categories, and access all of the new benefits, as soon as the new membership is launched.

To check the details of your your membership, including when it is next due for renewal, log in to your member dashboard.

What will the new player membership look like?

Our team are developing a range of different membership categories, based on player insight, that will appeal to a broader range of players and supporters. Each membership categories will provide distinctive benefits specifically tailored to a wide range of players, including exclusive money-can’t-buy experiences. Watch this space!

How much will the new player membership cost?

We’re currently developing different membership categories and the prices will compare favourably with other sports and will be within the range that current players have told us they would expect to pay. If you’re a player member, we’ll be in touch via email very soon to outline what the costs and benefits will be.

How can I share my views on player membership?

We’re keen to give everyone in the squash community the chance to join in the conversation on membership. There will be a number of opportunities for you to engage in the process and have your say on the topics that matter most to you. We're running a series of webinars in July and August based on the key themes that people told us they want to contribute to, from the benefits packages to the roll-out.

If you’re interested in having your say, you can find more details on our ‘Join the conversation’ page. We also encourage you to share your details so that we can ensure you are involved in helping to refine the membership scheme and ensure it supports everyone across the squash community to thrive.

Affiliated clubs and venues

How will it impact affiliated clubs?

Affiliated clubs will only need to pay for court fees based on the number of courts they have and the type of venue they are based at. When a club’s affiliation is next due for renewal, their players’ England Squash player membership will expire and these players will need to sign up for membership directly with England Squash. The club will no longer need to share member details with England Squash, but will be able to view the England Squash membership status and details of their club members.

The new scheme has been designed to enable us to support affiliated clubs better, reduce the admin burden on clubs, provide better value and work alongside them to grow the game.

My club’s affiliation is up for renewal before the new scheme is launched – how will this impact us?

Until the new scheme is launched, your club will continue to be invoiced for courts and members as they currently are on the existing scheme. This means that your club and all of your members listed on englandsquash.com will continue to receive the benefits of England Squash membership and affiliation up until the first renewal after the launch, which will be based on court fees only and your members will need to sign up for membership directly.

How much will club affiliation cost?

From spring 2024, affiliated clubs will only need to pay for court fees. Clubs will no longer be required to pay a per-player membership fee, so in practice clubs will benefit from smaller affiliation invoices. They will also benefit from a substantial reduction in the administration burden associated with the current membership model by not having to send us detailed member lists.

Coaches Club members

How does this affect Coaches Club members?

Currently all Coaches Club members receive all of the benefits of England Squash player membership as part of their membership benefits package. This arrangement will continue under the new scheme, and we plan to offer Coaches Club members access to the benefits available to the top-tier ‘Compete’ membership category.

County associations

How will this affect county associations?

The current ‘rebate’ mechanism, whereby county associations receive a proportion of membership and affiliation fees paid by members and clubs/venues within their county, will continue within the new model. All members (not just those who are members of a club) will be included.

We will also be keeping the ‘enhanced’ rebate for counties that mandate England Squash membership for their leagues and competitions.
