In August 2024, England Squash club affiliation and membership is changing. To support the squash community through this transition, we’ve put together some frequently asked questions on how the changes will impact and benefit players, coaches, clubs, league organisers and county associations.
General
Why's England Squash membership and affiliation changing?
From 19 August 2024, England Squash membership will change to a new direct model which means club affiliation will be split from player membership. This change will enable us to deliver better value to members and clubs, broaden the appeal and diversity of membership and provide improved support to the community, as well as providing a greater opportunity to grow membership in the future.
You can read more about how the changes will benefit the squash community on our ‘Why is membership changing?’ page.
What's the background for the change?
The current model has been in place for a long time and no longer reflects how modern-day organisations engage with their members. The benefits and value that the scheme offers to members have also not changed, which means membership does not sufficiently meet the needs of enough people within the squash community.
The pandemic, and subsequent return to play challenges, provided everyone with the opportunity to reflect on the suitability of the current scheme, and following insight and feedback from the squash community, a review of membership was conducted in 2022.
This independent review, undertaken by an external agency, included consultation with a wide range of stakeholder groups including clubs, counties and individual members. The key recommendation from the review was to move to a direct membership model.
When is membership and affiliation changing?
The new scheme will officially launch on 19 August 2024. However affiliated clubs and current members won't need to do anything until their affiliation or membership is due for renewal after this date. We encourage players who are members of an affiliated club to check their renewal date on their member dashboard so that they can understand when they will need to purchase direct player membership and access the new benefits.
Player members
How will this impact players whose affiliated clubs pay for their England Squash membership?
Currently, players who join England Squash via their club have their England Squash player membership paid by the club. In August 2024, this will change and all members will purchase their membership directly from England Squash when their current membership expires.
We encourage players who are members of an affiliated club to check their renewal date on their member dashboard so that they can understand when they’ll need to transition onto the new membership scheme.
How will this affect members who already pay for their membership directly?
The principle of membership for ‘direct’ members will not change, and these members will continue to purchase their membership directly from England Squash.
However, new membership categories, specifically tailored to different types of players, will be introduced in August 2024. These new categories will provide greater choice for members around the type of membership they hold.
Existing members will be able to continue to access all of their existing benefits until their current membership expires, at which point they will choose from one of the new membership categories. There will also be an opportunity to upgrade to one of the new categories, and access all of the new benefits, as soon as the new membership is launched.
To check the details of your membership, including when it is next due for renewal, log in to your member dashboard.
What will the new player membership look like?
Our team have developed a range of membership categories, based on player insight, that will appeal to a broader range of players and supporters. Each membership category will provide distinctive benefits specifically tailored to a wide range of players, including exclusive money-can’t-buy experiences. View the categories and their benefits.
How much will the new player membership cost?
We’ve developed different membership categories with prices comparing favourably with other sports. View the categories and their benefits. The new prices are within the range that current players have told us they would expect to pay.
Affiliated clubs and venues
How will it impact affiliated clubs?
Affiliated clubs will only need to pay for court fees (£75 per squash court, capped at six courts) based on the number of courts they have and the type of venue they are based at. When a club’s affiliation is next due for renewal, their players’ England Squash player membership will expire and these players will need to sign up for membership directly with England Squash. The club will no longer need to share member details with England Squash but will be able to view the England Squash membership status and details of their club members.
The new scheme has been designed to enable us to support affiliated clubs better, reduce the admin burden on clubs, provide better value and work alongside them to grow the game.
How much will club affiliation cost?
From August 2024, affiliated clubs will only need to pay for court fees. Clubs will no longer be required to pay a per-player membership fee, so in practice clubs will benefit from smaller affiliation invoices. They will also benefit from a substantial reduction in the administration burden associated with the current membership model by not having to send us member details.
The affiliation fee is £75 per squash court, capped at six courts.
Coaches Club members
How does this affect Coaches Club members?
As part of their benefits package, Coaches Club members currently receive all of the benefits that player members receive. This arrangement will continue under the new scheme, and Coaches Club members will have access to the benefits available to the top-tier ‘Play Plus’ membership category.
County associations
How will this affect county associations?
The current ‘rebate’ mechanism, whereby county associations receive a proportion of membership and affiliation fees paid by members and clubs/venues within their county, will continue within the new model. All members (not just those who are members of a club) will be included.
We will also be keeping the ‘enhanced’ rebate for counties that mandate England Squash membership for their leagues and competitions.
