Getting started as a coach

I want to become a squash coach – what do I need?

If you're ready to qualify as an England Squash Coach, you will need to:

  • Complete Safeguarding in squash and First aid awareness training (these come included in full coaching qualifications)
  • Hold an enhanced DBS check approved by England Squash
  • Sign up for one of our entry-level coaching courses to get started. Learn more here: Get Into Coaching

Not sure if you want to coach yet? Why not start by becoming a leader? You can lead sessions and support coaches by taking our Game Changer course, designed for young leaders and beginners who want to get involved without full coaching qualifications.

How do I know if I’m the right sort of person to coach squash?

If you enjoy helping others, love the game, and want to make a positive difference, you’re in the right place. Whether you’re a young leader, parent, volunteer, or passionate about getting others active, we have a coaching path for you.

What age do I need to be to coach squash?

Only qualified coaches aged 18+ can lead squash sessions on their own. But if you're younger, there are still ways to get involved and start your coaching journey:

  • 14–15 years old: You can take our Game Changer course and assist a qualified adult coach. You won't need a DBS, safeguarding, or first aid training at this stage, and you can’t lead sessions independently.
  • 16–17 years old: You're eligible to take any coaching course, as long as you meet the entry requirements (which may include DBS and safeguarding training). You can assist with sessions but can’t lead them alone until you're 18.
  • 18+ years old: Once you're qualified and meet all course pre-requisites, you can lead squash sessions independently

What course should Young Leaders take?

Young Leaders should start with the Game Changer course. We also offer a Young Leaders workshop that can be arranged at your club or venue.

How much do courses cost?

Leaders qualifications start from £25.00, with coaching qualifications starting from £125.00.

Our online CPD courses are currently free to Coaches Club members, with workshops costing £15.00 (£30.00 for non-Coaches Club members).

You can find more information via England Squash Learning.

Do I need to complete the Community Development Coach course before doing the Player Development Coach?

No. Both are entry-level qualifications. Choose the course that fits your goals and the players you want to work with. The Player Development Coach is more technical and suited to those with good playing ability and some coaching experience.

How do the courses work?

Our courses are all different - some are fully online, and some use blended learning. You'll need to check the specific course information on England Squash Learning to find the course most suitable for you.

When will there be a course in my area?

Courses are regularly added to our England Squash Learning platform. You can also follow our social channels for updates.

What is a bespoke workshop?

We offer tailored workshops - from Young Leaders to Community Squash Activators - delivered at your club or venue. Bespoke workshops at your own venue cost: £250 for up to 10 candidates, or £400 for up to 16. Fill in our short workshop enquiry form to start a conversation about hosting a workshop.

If I’m a Level 1 or Community Development Coach, can I coach individual lessons?

You can coach individual lessons as long as you’ve attended an England Squash Introduction to individual coaching workshop. You’ll also need to have completed your first aid training.

I’m a Game Changer, do I need anything else to lead sessions?

No, if you’re leading group adult beginner sessions, you can do so with the Game Changer leaders qualification.

If you want to lead Squash Stars sessions, you’ll need to take our Squash Stars Game Changer course, get your enhanced DBS and complete the England Squash safeguarding training before you’re insured.

Is there any financial help to fund the cost of the course?

Qualification maintenance and support

Do I need to renew my coaching qualification regularly?

No, coaching qualifications don’t expire. However, you must keep your DBS, safeguarding, and first aid up to date. We also recommend completing at least one CPD activity annually so that you keep your knowledge fresh.

Are there refresher courses or CPD opportunities?

Yes, we offer online courses, webinars, and practical workshops. Check our England Squash Learning platform for the latest options.

What support do I get after qualifying?

You’ll have access to our CPD library, resources and ongoing expert support from Coach Developers. We recommend attending in-person workshops and staying active in Coaches Club to keep developing as a coach.

What happens if I don’t pass the course or assessment first time?

Your Coach Developer will support you, help create an action plan, and guide you through reassessment (fees may apply).

Legal, Safety and Insurance

Do I need a DBS as a coach?

Yes. Any coach aged 16+ requires and enhanced DBS check. If you only complete the Game Changer course (and don’t work with adults at risk), a DBS is not required.

  • England Squash Safeguarding training (completed within the last 3 years)
  • England Squash First Aid training (completed within the last 3 years)

How do I renew my safeguarding and first aid?

Your safeguarding and first aid training needs renewing every 3 years (subject to change). These can be renewed via the England Squash Learning platform. Renewals are currently free for Coaches Club members.

Do you accept other safeguarding or first aid courses?

Does your first aid course make me a qualified first aider?

No. It provides basic awareness suitable for coaching squash, but it’s not a formal HSE first aid qualification. Check with your club or venue if a formal qualification is required.

I’m a Level 1 coach. Do I need first aid to stay insured?

Yes. All coaches must complete the First Aid Awareness course. If you qualified before August 2025 under the old scheme, you have until 1 July 2026 to complete it.

Can I get insurance through England Squash?

Yes. Coaches Club membership includes insurance, provided you keep your DBS, safeguarding, and first aid current.

If my safeguarding, first aid or DBS have expired, can I still coach?

No, this means your insurance is not valid*. You need to ensure all of these are up to date.

*If you’re a Level 1 coach, you’ll have until 1 July 2026 to take your first aid training. You remain insured without this until this time, unless you’re hoping to coach individual lessons.

Do Game Changers need to be Coaches Club members to be insured?

No. As long as you’re leading group beginner adult sessions, have completed the Game Changer course and have any level of England Squash membership, you’re ready to go.

How do I apply for a governing body endorsement?

Under the government’s Points Based System, clubs or counties wishing to employ players and coaches from outside the European Economic Area need to do so through the Tier 2 (Sportsperson) or Tier 5 (Temporary worker) Creative and Sporting categories. As part of this process, clubs must obtain a governing body endorsement from England Squash; this applies to Sponsors (clubs / counties) and Migrants (players and coaches).

To apply, download the form here and submit the appropriate documentation with a cheque for £50 made payable to England Squash. Please send this form to: Louise Pickford, Performance Operations Manager, England Squash, National Squash Centre, Sportcity, Manchester. M11 3FF

Please note, England Squash will not accept electronic or faxed submissions and applications will not be processed until they are completed and received in full along with any supporting documentation that may be required.

For further information on the Points Based System, please see the UK Visa & Immigration pages on the gov.uk website.

Do you recognise foreign coaching qualifications?

Due to the implementation of a new coaching framework, England Squash does not currently offer equivalency for foreign coaching qualifications. To register as a coach, you’ll need to complete the relevant England Squash course within our new framework. This ensures all coaches are trained to the same standard and follow the England Squash way.
