England Squash Awards: nominations criteria

Please note, nominations will be shortlisted based on quality not quantity. Please ensure you collate all information from people in your club before submitting your nomination.
Coach of the year
Awarded to a coach of any level who has made an impact over the last 12 months on people/players, a club/venue or a community.
Scored by:
1. Key achievements over the last 12 months.
2. The impact the coach has had on a player or a group of players, the club, venue, or community.
3. Evidence of increased participation across the club/venue, or amongst a particular community.
4. An example where they demonstrate one of the four England Squash values: being Adventurous, Driving an initiative or project, Connecting people and bringing people Together
Unsung hero of the year
Awarded to a member of the squash community of any age who during the last 12 months has given up their time and has had a positive impact on the club, squash players and/or the local community.
Scored by:
1. The role the unsung hero played/plays when they contribute to the squash community and the hours contributed each week.
2. Examples of how their efforts benefit the club/venue, the organisation, or the community.
3. Example of going above and beyond to help where possible.
4. An example where they demonstrate one of the four England Squash values: being Adventurous, Driving an initiative or project, Connecting people and bringing people Together
Club/venue of the year
Awarded to a club or venue* that has made a significant impact or contribution to squash participation over the last 12 months.
Scored by:
1. Success across the different types of activity on offer.
2. Number of players across different categories: junior, adult, women and girls, disability etc.
3. Key achievements in the last 12 months, examples include: funding, club development, increased participation, volunteer development, new audiences engaged e.g. disabled people, ethnically diverse communities or women and girls.
4. An example where they demonstrate one of the four England Squash values: being Adventurous, Driving an initiative or project, Connecting people and bringing people Together
5. Example provided on how the club has enhanced their local community and grown participation.
6. Evidence of the club making changes and becoming more sustainable, for example, how have they adapted to the current ecological crisis.
*The club must be affiliated to England Squash.
Referee of the year
Awarded to an England Squash referee who has shown commitment to the sport and performed their role to their greatest ability.
Scored by:
1. Number of events - the nominee must have worked on a minimum of 4 events for England Squash during the 2023/24 season.
2. Example of the referee showing commitment to the sport and their role as a referee.
3. Example of the nominee going above and beyond in their role as a referee.
4. An example where they demonstrate one of the four England Squash values: being Adventurous, Driving an initiative or project, Connecting people and bringing people Together
Rising Star of the year
Awarded to one boy and one girl, both under the age of 19 who has shown great potential and growth over the last 12 months.
Scored by:
1. Success across the different types of activity on offer.
2. Examples of how they have improved over the last 12 months.
3. Example of how they have met adversity to develop
4. Examples of demonstrating the highest on and off-court behaviour
5. Examples of their aspirations within the sport
6. An example where they demonstrate one of the four England Squash values: being Adventurous, Driving an initiative or project, Connecting people and bringing people Together
Young volunteer/coach of the year
Awarded to someone under the age of 19 who has made an active contribution to the community via volunteering or coaching within the past 12 months.
Scored by:
1. The role the young person plays, the venue where the volunteering or coaching takes place and the hours contributed per week.
2. Examples of how their work benefits the club/venue, the organisation, or the community.
3. Examples of going above and beyond to help where possible.
4. An example where they demonstrate one of the four England Squash values: being Adventurous, Driving an initiative or project, Connecting people and bringing people Together
Diversity and Inclusion Champion of the year
Awarded to a person or organisation who champions inclusion and diversity to benefit a local community and/or bring squash to a new audience.
Scored by:
1. Success and impact the person or organisation has had within the community.
2. Number of new participants the person or organisation has brought to the sport.
3. Example of how the person or organisation has worked with the community to make squash more diverse and inclusive.
4. Example of how the persons or organisations work benefits and contributes to the community it is based within.
5. An example where the person or organisation demonstrates one of the four England Squash values: being Adventurous, Driving an initiative or project, Connecting people and bringing people Together.
