The second day of the 2025 MB Nottingham English Junior Championships saw England’s brightest young stars in action at the University of Nottingham Sport and Nottingham Squash Rackets Club, as the main draws got under way in all 12 categories.
The highest seeded players took to the courts for the first time in the tournament - to be joined by successful qualifiers from the opening day - as all competed within their respective last 16s under the new multi-match monrad format.
And whilst a majority of games played out in accordance with rankings, several competitors enjoyed notable victories against higher seeds to put themselves firmly at the business end of the competition going into tomorrow’s final stages.
This was certainly the case in the Boys’ Under 19 event, which, during the evening’s play, threw up some drama. While top two seeds [1] Alex Broadbridge (Hampshire) and [2] Dylan Roberts (Kent) went through without undue ceremony, they were joined by 5/8 seeds Ronnie Hickling (Surrey) and Ismail Khalil (Warwickshire), who upset the odds to beat, respectively, the 3/4 pair of Sussex’s Jake Sim-Basker (17-15, 12-10, 11-6) and Surrey’s Michael Chak (11-6, 11-6, 8-11, 11-7).

Meanwhile, in the Girls’ Under 19 competition, the trophy will be contested tomorrow between top seed Mariam Eissa (Warwickshire), [2] Emily Coulcher-Porter (Buckinghamshire), [3/4] Megan Light (Hampshire) and [3/4] Olivia Owens (Worcestershire). Similarly, the Boys Under 17s went according to seed with Surrey trio of Gabriel Chak (1), Indie Flint (2) and Luke McBride (3/4) were accompanied triumphantly into the final day by [3/4] Ali Khalil (Warwickshire).

In the Girls’ Under 17 contest, [5/8] Sophie Marzouk (Sussex) clinched her top four place with [1] Harriet Broadbridge (Hampshire), [2] Renata Colabella (Kent) and [3/4] Fearne Copley (Yorkshire) by beating local qualifier Noor Al-Qamachi (Nottinghamshire) in straight games and, subsequently, [3/4] Ava Fox (Norfolk) in five: 11-6, 11-6, 5-11, 5-11, 12-10.
In the Boys’ Under 15 event, Yorkshire’s [9/16] Don Calvert battled through two five-game matches to edge out both second seed Joe Colton (Surrey) and [5/8] Aaron Suthi (Warwickshire) and join top seed Matthew Hong Ki Leung (Gloucestershire), as well as 3/4 seeds William Burton and Jaanshere Khan (Surrey), in the final day contest for the first four places.

There was a similar story in the corresponding age category for girls, as 9/16 seed Bella Gokani (Leicestershire) saw off [3/4] Sophie Vail (Hampshire) and [5/8] Nadia Ismail (Warwickshire). Gokani will take her place alongside top seed Ameerah Ismail (Warwickshire), [2] Esther Chak (Surrey) and [3/4] Phoebe Griffiths (Hampshire) in the quartet competing for GU15 honours.

There were fewer surprises arising from matches at Nottingham Squash Rackets Club, where top seeds finished the day in the driving seat. In the Boys’ Under 13 event, the Leicestershire Brown brothers [1] Oscar and [2] Finley lived up to their seedings, together with [3/4] Ben Lamond (Dorset) and, despite having to grind out wins in two five-game matches, [3/4] Jacob Askey (Warwickshire).
Top seed Sienna Hampshaw (Yorkshire), [2] Maya Goel ( Surrey), [3/4] Rida Ali (Sussex) and [3/4] Siona Mishra (Warwickshire) rose above their fellow Girls’ Under 13 players for the collective loss of just a single game across the eight matches they played.
In the Boys’ Under 11s, top seed James Swinden (Yorkshire), [2] Thomas Earwicker (Surrey) and 3/4 seeded Warwickshire duo Naishe Matamisa and Archibald McLeod were comfortable winners.
Similarly, the Girls’ Under 11 quartet of [1] Ada Brown (Norfolk), [2] Olivia Holbrook (Hampshire), [3/4] Sara Ibrahim (Sussex) and [3/4] Abigail Zeng (Avon) all won their two matches in straight games.
Finally, the top four Boys’ Under 9 seeds – namely [1] Cristian Law (Hertfordshire), [2] Keaton Fiander-Derry (Surrey), [3/4] Eyad Mahmoud (Lancashire) and [3/4] Musa Meer-Khan (Berkshire) - all secured their spots in the category’s Division 1 for tomorrow. Meanwhile, top seed Evie Hennings (Surrey) is well placed as the only unbeaten Under 9 girl going into the final day.
