Surrey Score Hat-Trick At Junior Inter Counties Finals

Surrey enjoyed a fruitful weekend at the Junior Inter Counties Finals as they scored a hat-trick of title triumphs.

There were braces for Sussex, Hampshire and Warwickshire, too, in an action-packed weekend with 118 teams taking part across eight different venues.

Surrey A were victorious in the Boys U13 and U15 deciders, as they came from behind to edge Gloucestershire and overcame Middlesex A, respectively.

Having been 2-1 down in the Boys U13 final, Surrey notched comfortable wins in the fourth and fifth games to overturn the deficit and clinch the victory.

In the Boys U15 title decider, Surrey A comfortably dispatched Middlesex A 4-1 to lift the crown, having notched two 5-0 dominant performances prior to the final.

Surrey’s third win came in the Girls U13 final as they didn’t drop a single game prior to the final where they defeated Hampshire to claim the title.

The decider was a closely-fought battle that went that distance, but it was Surrey who came out on top as they secured the victory in the fifth with an 11-4 win.

Warwickshire’s brace of titles came in the Girls’ finals, with victories in the U11 and U17 title deciders.

The Girls U11 didn’t drop a single game on route to the final, where they beat Surrey to clinch the trophy.

The U17s were dominant in their pursuit of reaching the decider where they dispatched South Wales to claim the crown.

In the Girls U15 final, it was Sussex who were triumphant over Yorkshire to make it a double success for the county after they denied Surrey A a fourth title win in the Boys U17 finale, comfortably taking the crown with a 3-0 victory,

Elsewhere, in the Boys U19 final, Hampshire beat Yorkshire A 2-1 after taking the first two games 3-1 and 3-2 before Yorkshire claimed a consolation win in the third.

The Hampshire Girls U19s claimed their title by the same scoreline as the Boys’ team, chalking up a 2-1 victory over South Wales as Hampshire netted a brace of titles from the event.

Meanwhile, Leicestershire edged Yorkshire A 2-1 to scoop the Boys U11 final, becoming the fifth different county to lift a title during the weekend.

The tournament’s organiser, Tim Vail, reflected on the success of the Junior Inter Counties Finals weekend:

“The Junior Inter Counties Finals were played across eight venues, using 32 courts, and 118 teams competed in the event. It was a great spectacle for the sport and it was fabulous to see so many girls playing, too.

“A lot of the finals went down to the last string, which is always exciting. Congratulations to all the winners.”
