Surbiton secure double gold at 2023/24 National Club Finals

It was a finals day to remember for Surbiton after the London-based side claimed two titles at the 2023/24 National Club Championships at Hallamshire Squash Club.

Also victorious in Sheffield were Leamington, Kenilworth and Pontefract, who all won one category apiece.

The Men’s Championship saw a final day match-up between Leamington and Surbiton, with plenty of star power on show.

World No.12 Victor Crouin represented Surbiton just one day prior to the start of his British Open campaign and displayed a professional performance to score a 3-1 win over England’s Declan James.

In the only five-setter of the Men’s Championship final, Leamington’s Owain Taylor survived Finnlay Withington, restoring parity twice to win the match 3-2 and level the tie at 1-1.

Egypt’s Omar El Torkey, who was representing Leamington, comfortably dispatched opponent Jack Mitterer, before Surbiton’s Noah Meredith defeated Rory Richmond in the final match of the tie.

Proceedings were eventually settled by points after each team won exactly 8 games, with Leamington narrowly edging it by 51 points to 50 to earn the trophy.

Surbiton were awarded their first title of the day through the Women’s Championship after a withdrawal from opponents Pontefract Squash & Leisure Club.

Elsewhere, Surbiton secured their second and final tropy of the day with victory in the Men’s Racketball Championship against Pontefract.

3-0 wins from Tim Vail and Pete Billson, alongside further 3-2 triumphs from Rory Duthie and Andrew Hill completed a ruthless 4-0 victory for Surbiton.

It was Kenilworth Squash Club who would land the Men’s Non-County Players Championship after their side earned 2-1 victories over Surbiton B and Bishop's Stortford Squash & Racketball Club.

Finally, Pontefract would emerge victorious in the Mixed Junior Team Championship. The Yorkshire-based outfit overcame Surbiton 2-1 before producing a clinical performance to beat Leamington 3-0, dropping just one game in the process.
