England's women stay on course for fifth spot in Hong Kong

Jasmine Hutton, Sarah Jane Perry and Lucy Turmel fired England's women to a 3-0 win over India at the WSF World Team Championships to keep them on track for a fifth-placed finish in Hong Kong.

After the disappointment of their quarter-final defeat to Malaysia on Thursday, England's injury-hit squad went into the play-offs for 5th-8th place on Friday and put in a polished performance against India's talented young side.

Former British national champion Hutton was up first against Akanksha Salunkhe, the Trinity College graduate who has been inside the world's top 100 for the last two years. World no.20 Hutton stamped her authority on the match from the off, taking it 11-7 11-7 11-6 in 25 minutes.

Perry, who is playing in her fifth World Team Championship, then came up against Anahat Singh, the sensational 16-year-old who has already won two senior Indian National trophies and eight PSA titles. But Perry, the former world no.5, used all her experience and array of attacking shots in a 11-6 11-7 14-12 victory.

England now face Hong Kong, China to decide fifth place on Saturday after the host nation defeated France 2-1 thanks to victories for Chan Sin Yuk and Tsz-Wing Tong.

England national coach Stuart Crawford said:

"I'm really pleased with how the girls responded after yesterday. All three of them were motivated to bounce back and they put in very solid performances. It was great to have Lucy Turmel back after a minor injury earlier in the week and I thought she played very well. We're looking forward to the final match with Hong Kong tomorrow."

England's men had a rest day on Friday before they play their semi-final against Switzerland on Saturday which begins at 7pm local time (11am GMT).
