Epsom lead the way at 2024 National Schools Championships

Epsom College led the way at the National School Championships finals as they enjoyed a hat-trick of successes at Edgbaston Priory.

Epsom claimed the KS5 and KS4 Girls’ titles as well as the KS5 Mixed Final in Birmingham to complete an impressive trio of titles.

It was also a fruitful afternoon for Wycliffe College, who claimed the KS5 and KS4 Boys’ finals.

In the KS5 Girls’ final, top seed Epsom College emphatically won their first two rounds 5-0 against King Edwards VI High School for Girls and Lincoln Minster before downing Gosforth Academy 4-1. Savannah Ingledew, Maja Maziuk, Isabella Hutton and Florence Tanguy defeated their Gosforth opponents on the way to lifting the trophy.

The KS4 Girls’ final also went the way of the seed as the top seed Epsom emerged victorious. The Surrey-based school began round one by defeating Lincoln Minster 4-1 before overcoming Kenilworth School 3-2. In the decider, wins from Maja Maziuk, Isabella Hutton and Cara Naidoo earned Epsom a 3-2 triumph against Gosforth Academy.

A third title for Epsom came in the KS5 Mixed Final, as they topped the table with 286 points, pipping Millfield School, Rainford High School and South Hunsley School to the crown.

Wycliffe College clinched the KS5 Boys’ title having not dropped a single match in in all three clashes, dispatching Eton College, King Edward’s School and Millfield School to secure the title in style.

In the KS4 Boys’ final, Wycliffe comprehensively saw off Portsmouth Grammar School and Aylesbury Grammar School with 5-0 wins in rounds one and two before clinching the final 4-1 against No.2 seed Epsom College.

Elsewhere in the KS3 Boys’ final, No.2 seed Bishop Wordsworth’s School defeated top seed King Edward’s School 3-2.

Having edged past Shelley College and St Aidan’s C of E High School in the opening two rounds, Bishop Wordsworth’s Gilbert Harrington, Frankie Binns and Jake Whitby all recorded victories in the final to capture the trophy.

In the KS3 Girls’ decider, Gosforth Trust came out on top against Bedford Modern School with a 3-2 victory.

Gosforth upset No.2 seed Sevenoaks in round one with a 3-2 win before dispatching No.3 seed Epsom College 4-1. In the final, Meera Jatania and Alice Pearsall notched 2-0 wins, before Freya Finnemore claimed a 2-1 victory to seal the title.

Tournament organisers Laura Mumford and Tim Vail said:

"We’re thrilled to have staged another hugely successful National Schools finals in Birmingham.

“It’s been fantastic to welcome so many new schools this year, featuring a number of children who’ve never picked up a racket before the start of the season - and getting their first taste of competition. Their smiles have said it all!

"This tournament truly offers something for every child at any level and we’re already working on plans to open up the competition to more schools and new players next season – watch this space!

“Huge thanks to all the schools and colleges who took part and to Edgbaston Priory for hosting another top quality tournament."
